Description

2018 sees the centenary of Sergeant Louis McGuffie of the King’s Own Scottish Borderers being awarded the Victoria Cross for his courageous actions near Wytschaete, Belgium during WWI.

On 28 September 1918 near Wytschaete, Belgium, during an advance Sergeant McGuffie entered several enemy dug-outs and, single-handed, took many prisoners. During subsequent operations he dealt similarly with dug-out after dug-out, forcing one officer and 25 other ranks to surrender. During the consolidation of the first objective, he pursued and brought back several of the enemy who were slipping away and was also instrumental in rescuing some British soldiers who were being led off as prisoners. Later in the day, while commanding a platoon, he took many more prisoners. He was killed by a shell a few days later at Wytschaete, Belgium on 4 October 1918.To commemorate this bravery BFPS, in collaboration with the Royal Burgh of Wigtown and the King’s Own Scottish Borderers Association, is producing a special philatelic cover for issue on the 28th September 2018.

The cover bears an image of Sergeant McGuffie along with the official citation describing his heroic actions. A special handstamp, BFPS 3217 featuring a silhouette of a Victoria Cross medal, will be used to cancel a 1st Class stamp from the 2018 Royal Mail special issue WWI series.

There will be 250 of these covers produced with only 50 of them being available for sale to the public. Subscribers will be given the first opportunity to purchase before these are put into the BFPS shop. This will be a ‘first come first served’ item.

These may be ordered by post using the BFPS Mail Order form and by sending a cheque (payable to ‘BFPS CIC’) to BFPS The Old Post Office Links Place Elie LEVEN KY9 1AX.
