Description

The First regular airmail service began in March 1919 when the RAF flew letters to the forces occupying Germany.

The first GPO airmail service commenced on 11th November 1919 when a DH4A aircraft was flown from Hounslow to Le Bourget by Lt J McMullin. An airmail surcharge of 2s 6d per oz was added to the normal 2.5d letter rate for all mail carried.

An illustrated cover was produced as part of the RAF Museum Series to commemorate this event sponsored by RAF Northolt. The cover was flown over the same route on 11th November 1969 and affixed with a Concorde stamp cancelled with this special handstamp.

A serviced cover could be ordered from the Philatelic Officer at RAF Northolt at a cost of 5 shillings.
