Description
At 0945 hours on 2nd October 1973 Captain BCA LEE RE completed a 7.5 mile towed parachute flight from Cardak in Asian Turkey to Gallipoli in European Turkey across the Dardanelles and in so doing achieved the first ever intercontinental parachute flight.
This flight had been several years in the planning and in fact in 1969 plans had been made for a flight between Morocco and Gibraltar but due to diplomatic difficulties this never took place.
During this 1973 successful flight Captain LEE was assisted by four members of 9 Independent Parachute Squadron RE and the towing craft a 115 HP Dory from the 1st Raiding Squadron Royal Marines, was crewed by Marine Jappy and Marine Prattey
The flight took 45 minutes.
