In connection with the Naphthadag stamps which make possible automatic letter facing and cancelling, an electronic sorting machine went in to full scale operation at the Southampton Sorting Office on December 19th 1957.

The cancelling machine dealing with all mail passing through this sorting unit used a new die with the code letter ‘S’

Dies used in the ordinary machines at Southampton had code letters ‘A’ or ‘B’
