Description

The cover depicts an early postage stamp and cancellation. From 1844 stamps were cancelled with a numeral postmark with each town having its own number. Glasgow being 159.

In 1855 a new experimental type was introduced which combined the number and a date stamp, this was known as a duplex an example shown on the left of the cover.

A few years later a roller cancellation came in to use and it is this type that is incorporated in the handstamp.
